A bit of history:
Martim Afonso de Sousa, when disembarking in 1531, named this island Tynharéa, which the Bahian accent soon transformed into Ilha de Tinharé.
The Tinharé Island is located north of the islands of the Bay of Camamu, down south of Bahia, the region known as Valenciano Board or Dende Coast. Due to its privileged geographical location, it was the scene of numerous attacks by French and Dutch squadrons, a real free zone for privateers and pirates during the colonial period.
Under the jurisdiction of the captaincy of São Jorge dos Ilhéus, Jorge de Figueiredo Correa received the property of D. João III, and appointed Francisco Romero to colonize the lands. The constant attacks of the Aymara and Tupiniquim Indians on the region’s continental population favored the rapid settlement of the islands, and in 1535 the Morro de São Paulo village was born in the north of the island .
Morro de São Paulo protected the so-called “false bar of the Todos os Santos Bay”, a strategic entrance to the Itaparica Canal to the Santo Antônio Fort (now Barra’s Lighthouse); and the Tinharé channel was essential in transporting production from the main centers to supply the capital, Salvador. The geographic importance of the island during the colonial period justifies the wealth of historical monuments, today protected by the National Historical Heritage.

The village:
Arriving at the Morro de São Paulo pier , go up the ramp and cross the Portaló (a passage where people transit outside or inside)
On the left is the path to the fortress (fort) and in front, the slope that leads to the Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz and the path to the Lighthouse .
Just ahead is the Aureliano O. Lima Square where the local handicraft fair takes place every night.
There, you’re at Morro de São Paulo!
Ahead is the main street of Vila – Rua Caminho da Praia, precisely because it is the path to the beaches , and to the side, Rua da Fonte Grande .
This whole part, including the entrance and the main street up to the access to the beaches and encompassing the side streets, form what would be Vila do Morro de São Paulo .
The village is the point of reference for almost everyone on the island. Most of the inns , restaurants , shops and agencies are concentrated here . It is where people go, especially at night, to see and be seen. A visit to the Village is mandatory.
Continuing to the right on Rua da Fonte Grande, you arrive at “Seu Bonzinho” bakery, right in front of Fonte Grande , it is another meeting point for natives, residents and tourists.
From here you have access to Lagoa, Ponta da Pedra , Gamboa beach and Campo da Mangaba .
From Campo da Mangaba you have a privileged view of almost all the beaches that surround the hill. You can get there by the Mangaba staircase (accessed by Fonte Grande) or by the staircase that leaves from the Second Beach .
This climb deserves strategic stops to admire the landscape that opens up with each step.
